Meet Kristin and Jason of Spitfire Girl

Kristin Schroder is the original Spitfire Girl, a Texas craft genius who through her keen eye, careful curating, and unstoppable drive to create, has successfully launched the Spitfire Girl brand.

For Kristin, creativity has always been paramount in her life. Even with two small children there was never a choice when it came to making art – it was a part of her daily ritual. As she puts it now, “Wake up, make art!”

Around that same time, Kristin sent out birthday invitations for one of her daughters in the form of a funky little box with a note and a lizard toy inside. The children and parents were so tickled by the little box cards that Kristin knew she had to run with the idea.

With her background in design and experience in the fine arts world, Kristin turned to the gift market with her box cards and thus Spitfire Girl was born. Spitfire Girl grew rapidly but truly hit it’s stride when Kristin met her now husband Jason, seven years ago.

Kristin’s design aesthetic and eye for trends, and Jason’s illustrative prowess, from his background as a tattoo artist, made for a winning combination. Within two weeks of meeting each other they came up with the “cheeky fortune cookie line,” which was immediately picked up by retailers across the US.

With two beautiful retail stores in Los Angeles and a burgeoning online business. Kristin and Jason continue to create fun new products, setting new trends, and growing the Spitfire Girl Brand.

Sick Again

Yes, it’s true. I’m in bed and feel like poop. 5112474493 b37081b19f z 300x199 Sick Again

My kids keep busting in trying to get me out of bed, UGH. They want me to take the to dim sum, Gross. My youngest, Suki, then wants to go shopping for her first formal dress. She is in 8th grade. So I think I will take her to Betsy Johnson and look for something like this:

Until next time,

Today is the day I met my husband 4 years ago.

What a day it was. I had been single for 5 years and was done with dating and determined to focus only on my kids, my company and myself. My friends invited  my children and I over for thanksgiving. With my crew and my best friend from Texas, Elaine in tow we headed out for our Thanksgiving adventure.

When we arrived at their house I felt so good about myself and my new commitment. I was golden.  I said hello to everyone and then took a look out back, through the french doors I stepped and there he was. Standing dead center in a black cowboy shirt all alone frying a turkey. When we met eyes it was love at first sight, like lightning.

At the end of the day we exchanged info. Later that nite at  3:00 am I awoke abruptly and had a premonition. It was was like someone smacked me. I knew at that moment he was the one. I knew I would spend the rest of my life with him.

Happy Anniversary Jason.

Much love and respect

Our Wedding Day

And They Lived Happily Ever After.

Our Family Morning Walk

It’s been a bit stressful here at Spitfire Girl with all the Real Simple attention and filling Holiday orders for our stores. I needed to take a break from work and have some quality family time. We live in Los Angeles, so naturally I’m sure you assume my house is in the “big” city. Luckily we live on top of a mountain surrounded by a beautiful park. When I go home, it’s like living in the country. This morning we went on a walk. I took some great photographs that I would like to share with you.

Now with the dogs walked and the kids happy, it’s time to go to the store!

Had a bit of a rough day….

Yesterday started out a little hectic. I’m not quite sure what the deal was and how I ended up being in a terrible mood.

I woke up around 7:00 am to take the kids to school. It was raining in Los Angles. When this happens it’s really stressful driving, because when the rain comes down people freak out in their cars and just cannot drive. Very frustrating. I don’t understand why people have this problem here. It’s just rain people. No need to get in a panic.

Kids were driving me crazy, ” Hurry Up MOM” Ugh.

Then all sorts of little things happen, I stepped and then slid into one of Bennie’s chocolate gifts, if you know what I mean. I mean ReallY?? Good God. A whole bunch of other not so fun things happened, which I won’t get into. And besides I know you want to hear about only the good stuff.

So that’s when I decided if I hang around, I’m probably going to end up in tears. So I decided to drag my husband to see ” Due Date” to change my mood. I give the movie a sideways thumb. So So. But it  did manage to get me out of my funk. A few laughs here and there…along with popcorn and candy. That certainly helps.

Then we went to the west side to be by the sea. I new that’s what my soul needed. The seals, the sea, some jumping dolphins and the sunset. Beauty, that’s what we needed a good dose of. So we went to MoonShadows in Malibu, a touristy place right on the sea. With a Mai Tia in hand, we watched the sunset. It was beautiful.

My husband and I are always on the hunt for historical bars in Los Angles. So while catting around in Santa Monica, we spotted The Chey Jay. We were drawn in by the neon and the frozen in time aspect of the place, but had no idea what a piece of history Jay’s Place really is. This little resturanut bar was found in 1959 and was frequented by an endless list of show business icons including Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Marlon Brando, Lee Marvin, Robert Stack, Natalie Wood, Warren Beatty, Elizabeth Taylor just to name a few. It’s a tiny little place and a great discovery.

We did good. We turned our day around and made it one of the best days off I’ve had in a while.

Note to self. Do it more often, tiny day vacations. LIVE!

I hope this inspired you.

Desert Trip

Just got back from a road trip. Definitely was a much needed get away. Nothing better than hitting the road in search of adventure thrift stores. Well it just so happens there was a reason for this special trip. It was my husbands birthday and this trip couldn’t have been any better.

Before we hit the road I placed his giant present in front of him, a record player! I must admit I’m totally loving this gift too.  The perfect gift that was well received set the mood for the trip–VINYL Scavenger’s!!! We hit desert swap meets, out of the way freaky thrifts stores and garage sales.  As I am typing I am listening to the best find thus far, Rod Stewart, ” A night on the town”, 1974. One word- Incredible!

While traveling From Pappy and Harriet’s to Palm Springs…. well we went the wrong way for a good bit, but stumbled upon this awesome Bookstore. A cool desert ex-tattooer owned bookstore.. Crazy!!! A wondering maze of cool books!
