Unicorns!

Here at Spitfire Girl, we love unicorns. Not only are they magical, they represent courage, grandeur, wisdom, and nobility—all of the traits of a badass Spitfire Girl.

The history of the unicorn is also super interesting to us. According to legend, only a virgin can catch a unicorn. The original engraving pictured above is from the 15th century and shows the “capture” of the unicorn. And by golly did she capture a good one! It has the same face as Spitfire Girl’s new unicorn enamel pin.

The common depiction of the dreamy, white unicorn as we typically know it developed from narwals being hunted and having their tusks sold as magical unicorn horns. It was believed their horn had the power to render poisoned water potable and to heal sickness. Wow!

But with most symbols and badass creatures, the unicorn also has a dark side. The mythology of a dark, menacing unicorn developed from tales associated with the dangerous and mean-spirited wooly rhino.

The unicorn also has frenemies. In Babylonian folklore from 3500 BC, the lion and the unicorn hate each other. However, the unicorn and lion seem to have reconciled, as they make an appearance together on today’s British coat of arms. The unicorn as a symbol of goodness and honor, and the lion as a symbol of courage and strength. Aww, BFFs.

It’s no surprise that the unicorn’s grace, combined with its wild side, makes it a favorite for us at Spitfire Girl.

Meet Kristin and Jason of Spitfire Girl

KristinJason large Meet Kristin and Jason of Spitfire Girl

Kristin Schroder is the original Spitfire Girl, a Texas craft genius who through her keen eye, careful curating, and unstoppable drive to create, has successfully launched the Spitfire Girl brand.

For Kristin, creativity has always been paramount in her life. Even with two small children there was never a choice when it came to making art – it was a part of her daily ritual. As she puts it now, “Wake up, make art!”

Around that same time, Kristin sent out birthday invitations for one of her daughters in the form of a funky little box with a note and a lizard toy inside. The children and parents were so tickled by the little box cards that Kristin knew she had to run with the idea.

With her background in design and experience in the fine arts world, Kristin turned to the gift market with her box cards and thus Spitfire Girl was born. Spitfire Girl grew rapidly but truly hit it’s stride when Kristin met her now husband Jason, seven years ago.

Kristin’s design aesthetic and eye for trends, and Jason’s illustrative prowess, from his background as a tattoo artist, made for a winning combination. Within two weeks of meeting each other they came up with the “cheeky fortune cookie line,” which was immediately picked up by retailers across the US.

With two beautiful retail stores in Los Angeles and a burgeoning online business. Kristin and Jason continue to create fun new products, setting new trends, and growing the Spitfire Girl Brand.

Spitfire Girl Highlight: Motorcyclist Karen Gorham

Spitfire Girl Highlight: Motorcyclist Karen Gorham

Being a Spitfire Girl isn’t just about swigging from your favorite SFG wooden flask or lying on one of our colorful throw pillows on a sunny afternoon.  It’s a spirit- a funky mixture of fire, ice and for Karen Gorham the pine fresh scent of the open road. A Texan at heart now living in LA, Karen visited our downtown office to chat with us about all things motorcycles, being a woman on a seemingly men driven road, and how it felt to make her longest trip alone on a motorcycle. From Los Angeles to her home city of El Paso, Karen reflected on what she saw, who she met, and the beautiful scenery of the American Southwest scattered between.

Having been a rider her whole life, the terrain of the road isn’t foreign for Karen. It’s her mobile home-away-from-home wherever the skyline takes her. Born in El Paso, Texas, Karen originally wanted to ride because her older brother did, “I always thought what my brother did was really cool.  He built a mini bike and let me have it- it was then on that I was obsessed with two wheels.” It was in her late twenties and living in Dallas where she began to build a love of BMX riding. She eventually began to attract more women, getting a few gal pals to join, “At that time there weren’t a lot of girls riding. We started to get more women together and all the girls I hung out with started getting dirt bikes, too.”

Moving to LA, a city of hustlers and go getters, the bug to get her own motorcycle finally sunk its teeth into her,  “Yeah, it was right [then that] I realized that I could do this- I could buy a motorcycle.  I don’t need my parents to buy it for me. Again, no one else was riding at this time, so there was no influence.” With her first long trip to Joshua Tree a success, Karen began planning the next to her hometown of El Paso, “Since I’m from Texas and I love Texas, I knew I wanted my bike to be in Texas at some point.” Riding on highways, freeways, and even the dirt roads along the Mexico border in between.
Karen is a Spitfire Girl through and through.
“For me, I think it’s somebody who’s not afraid and somebody that’s outspoken. Someone who is definitely not afraid to be true to himself or herself.”  Taking her shoes off her feet she showed us her socks, “I just got these ‘Bad Ass’ socks the other day from you guys! I’m most definitely a Spitfire Girl.”

Spring is in the Air

Looks like the seasons are a-changing. The first day of spring is only two weeks away and you know what that means….

sfg fun3 Spring is in the Air

Here are some fun facts about the spring solstice for everyone:

- Legend has it that you can stand a raw egg on it’s end only during the spring equinox.

- Apparently soil smells different during the spring

- Animals have sexy time

- It’s a symbol of renewal and better times.

What better way to celebrate rebirth than with Spitfire Girl?

Spitfire Girl Sightings

Guys. Guys. GUYS!

Get this:

So over the weekend, I went to Big Sur and I stayed in this cabin in the middle of nowhere. There was no one around for miles and since I’m scared of nature I was obviously, terrified. I mean look at this place, there are plants everywhere:

IMG 2642 764x1024 Spitfire Girl Sightings

Anywho, the night time strikes, I’m sitting in this cabin. It’s quiet. There’s no TV or music or anything. I have nothing to do, so naturally I decide to snoop through the drawers to see if there are any cool books to read because obviously, I was completely unprepared for this trip. But, guess what I found?

A SPITFIRE GIRL NOTEBOOK! WHAT?! HOW?! IN THE WOODS?! And with that discovery I felt slightly more at peace. A little slice of home had inflitrated my trip and suddenly I felt WAY more comfortable being in nature.

Here’s the best part: you can buy the same notebook for your little cabin in the woods online or at the store! Hurray!

The boring stretch between Christmas and Summer

You guys, it’s here. The worst time of the year. Remember just a mere two months ago when we were drinking eggnog and opening presents? Then right after that we were poppin’ bottles of champagne and wearing an abundance of glitter and watching the ball drop. Valentines Day was the final event before the dark months, and for some Valentines Day is one of the worst days of the whole year, so maybe some of you are well into this seasonal rut. The next holiday coming up is St. Patrick’s Day, which in itself is depressing because I’ve always hated kelly green and I don’t like beer. So what’s after that? Spring Break? I remember when I was in school, Spring Break was the best, but now as a boring old working adult, all it means is that I will be working while the 1% is on vacation I and won’t be able to find parking. At least I’ll be able to live vicariously through some of these vacationers through Rich Kids of Instagram while I’m filling up my gas-tank for $4.50 a gallon and wishing I could fuel my car with my own tears.

For those of you who are in the same boat as me, I’ve compiled a list of things we have at Spitfire Girl to keep you occupied on these shockingly cold and boring days.

Start coloring! Doodles by Taro Gomi is the greatest coloring book in the world. It’s no Disney Princess bothing nothingness coloring book, it lets you express yourself in a million different ways. To be honest, my freshman year in college I had this coloring book and would bring it to my labs and color during “The History of Life.”
The boring stretch between Christmas and Summer

Don’t play with fire? Why not? Draw to your rebellious heart’s content.
The boring stretch between Christmas and Summer

Have a ball…with balls! (Haha, balls.) Let’s be real, bouncy balls will always be fun. When I’m 97 years old and have fake hips and smell like moth balls, I will still kick my walker out of the way to play with a big giant bouncy ball. In this case, you have a whole bag full of them. Go wild.

The boring stretch between Christmas and Summer

Spend your next day off building a fort and making shadow puppets. I’m not talking about the old-fashioned two-fingers-look-like-a-bunny shadow puppets, I mean something really exciting – can your stupid hands make a goat? I doubt it.

The boring stretch between Christmas and Summer

Feeling cold AND lonely? Kill two birds with one stone. Get yourself five new friends AND warmth with these guys.

The boring stretch between Christmas and Summer

Didn’t celebrate the not-real holiday that is President’s Day? It’s never too late to honor good ol’ Abe with this flask.
The boring stretch between Christmas and Summer

Why not educate yourself on human anatomy? There’s nothing better than learning! Stay in school, kids!

These things should keep you busy for a little bit. In the meantime, come by the store and ~*Treat Yo Self*~ to these things or the hundreds of other fun goodies we have!

Valentines Day!
